Almost two years ago, on the 31st of July, 2019, I subscribed to the NBA Top Shot newsletter.
Before you conclude that I made a million dollars on buying random basketball clips, the answer is “No.”
In fact, I’ve never bought any NBA moment.
But it’s been wild to see the early adoption crowd grow to a public frenzy.
Out of all domestic leagues in the United States, the National Basketball Association has been the savviest of connecting with each new generation and exploring every digital medium to reap community engagement.
As with everything I know, I’ve learned from people…
Yesterday, I was happy to share the news that Stripe could be worth over $100 billion.
Today, it is unsurprising that the private market may be valuing SpaceX at $74 billion:
It’s unusual for Sequoia to make new investments at such a high valuation. At least one of the firm’s partners has a long-time relationship with SpaceX founder and Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. Sequoia partner Roelof Botha was chief financial officer at PayPal Holdings Inc. when Musk was its CEO two decades ago.
A person familiar with Sequoia’s thinking said the firm is particularly enthusiastic about SpaceX’s Starlink, a…
Going to bed means listening to something that makes me laugh.
One podcast I listen to weekly is “The Jeselnik & Rosenthal Vanity Project.” Link
The podcast is hosted by two college friends, one of whom is comedian Anthony Jeselnik.
I first watched Anthony Jeselnik perform at the “Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump” back in 2011.
My favorite line from that entire roast of the pre-President was Jeselnik’s closer:
Walter Isaacson wrote biographies on Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, and Henry Kissinger.
But he also wrote a book called “The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution.” Link
One of my favorite anecdotes from that book was about high school student Bill Gates dismissing his college application for MIT to play pinball:
I’m making a traveling shortlist for 2022.
It may include visiting Qatar to watch the FIFA World Cup.
There’s a chance I’ll opt for Airbnb ($ABNB) stays over hotels, except in Qatar.
One commonality between the two lodging experiences might be Roku ($ROKU).
I’ve never owned any hardware iteration of a Roku.
I’m more of a Google ($GOOGL) Chromecast fan.
But I’ve used plenty of Rokus outside of my home.
Many times, I felt unimpressed with the style of its remote and its OS interface.
I never felt like converting to a Roku since my TV operating system naturally runs…
Scheduling a late afternoon ophthalmologist appointment and then beginning to type on a screen that looks illegible is a self-inflicted wound.
And yet, here I am. Albeit delayed.
Speaking of vision, let’s talk about Vision.
When I officially began my Disney+ ($DIS) subscription last month, I hadn’t planned to watch “WandaVision.”
Of all the characters thrown my way in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the relationship between The Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) and Vision wasn’t what I expected to be monitoring heading into Valentine’s Day weekend.
But credit to the showrunners and the superb acting range of Elizabeth Olsen and…
I’m on book number five of 2021.
It is “Ready Player Two” by Ernest Cline. Link
I enjoyed the first book “Ready Player One.” Link
But I was disappointed by the film, direct by Steven Spielberg. Link
The book sequel was released last November, and the publisher partnered with Roblox ($RBLX) to serve as a comparable immersive virtual universe:
To promote the sequel to Ready Player One — a book about a treasure hunt inside a virtual universe — author Ernest Cline has partnered with the hit kids game Roblox to re-create something akin to the plot of the original…
Do I have a Twitter ($TWTR) alert set for every Elon Musk tweet?
Do I pay attention to any not related to SpaceX launches or a new Tesla ($TSLA) model car?
But what about Dogecoin ($DOGE.X), you ask?
Hard pass. Matt Levine says it better:
Dogecoin is GameStop stripped of all the distracting reality. No one on Reddit is going to publish a due diligence post about how the market undervalues Dogecoin’s cash hoard and customer loyalty. There are no Dogecoin shorts to squeeze, no Dogecoin options market makers to get caught in a gamma trap. The serious…
I haven’t coded anything in a couple of years.
Codecademy used to be a daily stop for me, but that time’s been replaced by Duolingo, where my streak of practicing Italian is up to 819 consecutive days.
Coding takes a bit of vision and concentration… but mainly a reason to do so.
Last night on Twitter, someone explained in 10 tweets how to use Webflow. Link
This is what Webflow does:
This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday.
Had Valentine’s Day fallen on a weekday between Tuesday and Thursday, I’d suspect that one of those would’ve been an ideal date for Bumble ($BMBL) to IPO.
Alas, next Thursday is the closest workday that marries attention of the stock market’s dollars and acts as an indirect reminder to absent-minded males to arrange something superfluously special for their partners:
